Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Saturday, April 30: At 3:39 am officers were called to Wild Rose Casino for a small plastic bag of suspected narcotics that had been dropped on the floor by a customer. The officer spoke to the male subject, who denied the bag came from him. The officer is investigating and possible charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. At 7:56 am officers were called to Finch’s Greene County Motors for a reported overnight burglary to several motor homes. Fifteen units had been entered by force and electronics were removed, along with interior damage to most units. The officer collected latent fingerprints and blood evidence at the scene to be tested at the DCI crime lab. The investigation continues.
At 8:25 am a complainant reported the theft of a cell phone SIM card from a residence in the 1400 block of Southfield Drive. At 10:20 am a complainant reported criminal mischief to a mailbox in the 1200 block of S. Elm St. At 3:30 pm a complainant reported phone harassment from a known female subject. The officer spoke to the female and learned the calls were in connection to a dog the complainant is fostering for her. The officer is investigating further. At 10:28 pm four callers advised of hearing gun shots near the 400 block of S. Locust St. The officer was unable to find the source.
Thursday, April 28: At 7:59 pm a mother reported her 5-year-old son was missing. He was riding his bike and she believed he had gone to the courthouse square with a friend. Officers located the juvenile near his residence in the 600 block of W. Lincoln Way.
Wednesday, April 27: At 12:39pm staff at Hy Vee reported a shoplifting theft that had occurred at the business on April 25. The officer has been provided video footage of the crime and is currently working to identify the male involved. At 3:38 pm an officer was advised of a possible theft that had occurred at Tri County Lumber. The officer is investigating. At 10:11 pm the Calhoun County sheriff’s office forwarded information to an officer about a possible sexual assault that was reported to have occurred in Jefferson sometime in the past few weeks. The officer is starting an investigation.
Tuesday, April 26: At 7:42 am a complainant reported the theft of a bicycle from a residence in the 500 block of W. Mahlon St. At 3:51 pm officers were advised of a group of subjects at the Greene County Middle School passing out Bibles to students as they left school. No laws were violated as the group was on the public sidewalk. School officials had given the group permission to be there. ****** Ryan James Brown, 43, of Jefferson has been charged in connection to a criminal mischief at Wild Rose Casino on April 19. It was reported that Brown had punched a gaming machine, causing damage to it. He has been charged with criminal mischief- second degree (Class D felony)*.****** The officer has finished the investigation into a criminal mischief of a vehicle in the 100 block of N Chestnut St on April 10. Jared Dean Dennhardt, 27, of Jefferson, and Tre A. Wilson, 19, of Aurora, NE, have both been charged with criminal mischief- second degree (Class D felony)*. ****** Kyle Matthew Cuddy, 29, of Jefferson has been charged with two counts of burglary- third degree (Class D felony)*. The charges stem from an investigation into two separate burglaries reported at a residence in the 500 block of S. Locust St April 18 and April 20. Officers executed a search warrant at Cuddy’s residence on April 22. Stolen property was taken from the S. Locust St residence was recovered.
Monday, April 25: At 10:47 am a complainant reported a possible criminal mischief to his vehicle tire at Greene County High School. At 10:51 am a complainant reported a burglary recurring overnight at a residence in the 500 block of S. Locust St. This is the third burglary at the residence recently. The officer is investigating. At 11:55 am an employee at Greene County Medical Center reported the theft of a purse from the facility. The officer is investigating. At 3:37 pm an officer was requested at the Greene County High School for a student who had assaulted a teacher. The student was unhappy when asked to clean up his mess and ended up spraying a teacher in the face with a chemical cleaner. Ian Jensen, 16, of Jefferson has had charges sent to juvenile court of assault – simple.* At 3:39 pm an officer investigated a one vehicle backing accident at Kum & Go. A 2005 Pontiac Bonneville, owned by Sandi Cook of Coon Rapids and operated by Robbie Anthofer backed into a gas pump at the station before leaving the area. The gas pump was damaged and bent over. The Jefferson fire department responded but did not find any leaking fuel. The Cook vehicle suffered very minor damages. The gas pump repair estimate will be made by technicians in the next few days and provided to the officer. At 4:43 pm officers were advised of subjects placing spring clean-up items for pick up at an empty residence in the 300 block of W. Reed St. The officer will forward this information to sanitation workers so the proper residence is charged for any extra items. At 5:23 pm a complainant reported the theft of stereo equipment from his vehicle while it was parked in the 400 block of E. Vest St. At 7:03 pm a complainant reported a burglary to a residence in the 300 block of E. Lincoln Way. Items had been removed from the residence. The officer has begun an investigation. At 11:21 pm Wild Rose Casino staff requested the removal of an intoxicated male patron at. A Greene County deputy assisted the JPD officer. After all efforts to have the male get a room and stay at the Super 8 Motel were exhausted, the deputy arrested Richard Arlan Evans of Nevada for interference with official acts (simple misdemeanor)*.
Sunday, April 24: At 10:37 am officers were called to a residence in the 400 block of E. Vest St for a domestic situation. It was reported that a Grand Junction male came to the residence and assaulted his estranged wife and left with the couple’s young child. JPD officers requested assistance from the Greene County sheriff’s office in locating and arresting the male in Grand Junction. Johnathan Dale Laue was arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault – second offense (serious misdemeanor) and criminal mischief – fifth degree and trespass (simple misdemeanors)*. The child was returned to the mother. At 9:45 pm staff at Kum & go reported a shoplifting theft there. The office is investigating. At 10:22 pm an officer performed a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 200 block of S. Walnut St. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Jonathan Mitchell Cole, 19, of Des Moines for OWI – first offense (serious misdemeanor) and possession of alcohol by underage person (simple misdemeanor)*.
Saturday, April 23: At 2:38 pm officers arrested Christina Lynn Owens, 30, of Jefferson on an outstanding JPD arrest warrant for domestic abuse assault-simple*. The warrant stemmed from a reported domestic abuse assault at a residence in the 500 block of N. Wilson on April 11. At 10:34 pm a male subject requested officers at Wild Rose Casino for problems with casino security officers. The officers made contacted with the male, who was being unreasonable in his claims and demands to officers. Greg Van Sickle, 50, of Dewey, AZ, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication (simple misdemeanors)*.
Friday, April 22: At 10:54 am the JPD executed a search warrant at 504 S. Olive Street. Officers were looking for stolen property from the two reported burglaries at a residence in the 500 block of S. Locust St April 18 and 19. Officers recovered stolen property from those burglaries. Charges are pending at this time. At 12:24 pm a complainant reported an assault that occurred March 17 at Casa de Oro. At 8:20 pm the VFW post commander reported the theft of the flag and rope from the display near the tank on the bike trail. The VFW post will offer a reward to anyone with information leading to the conviction of the person(s) responsible. It will cost $250 to replace the flag and rope.
Thursday, April 21: At 8:30 am a complainant reported the theft of four rugs from the laundromat at 301 W. Reed St. The theft had occurred on March 15. At 11:23 pm officers and the Jefferson fire department responded to 509 N. Chestnut St for a reported house fire. The homeowner had put the small fire out in the kitchen before the arrival of first responders. The fire department set up fans to clear the residence of smoke. A pan of grease had caught fire on the stove, setting off the smoke alarms.
Wednesday, April 20: At 1:43 am staff at Kum & Go advised of an intoxicated male who was harassing employees. The officer arrived and made contact with the male. Craig Darwin Presley, 55, of Jefferson was arrested for public intoxication (simple misdemeanor)*. At 1:35 pm officers were advised that a male subject with outstanding arrest warrants was in the area of the 300 block of N. Oak St. The officer did not locate the wanted subject. At 2:23 pm officers were advised of a suspicious male and vehicle at the residence located at a residence in the 500 block of S. Locust St where a burglary had been reported two days earlier. The officer is still investigating.
Tuesday, April 19: At 2:51 am an officer made contact with subjects in a vehicle parked at Russell Park. The officer’s investigation led to Douglas James Bumgardner, 15, of Grand Junction being cited for failure to have a valid driver’s license and curfew violation. At 7:34 am a traffic stop in the 500 block of W. Madison St resulted in the arrest of the driver, Kaleb Lee Lentz, 21, of Scranton on a charge of driving while barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 8:41 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino requested an officer for criminal mischief to a gaming machine. The officer learned from witnesses that a known male from Jefferson had punched a gaming machine and left the casino bleeding. The officer later made contact with the male. He advised he was frustrated from not winning and advised he did punch the machine, causing injury to his hand. When advised it was estimated to be $3,000 to repair the machine, the male advised he had given the casino enough money and would not pay that much. Charges are pending at this time.
Monday, April 18: At 12:26 am a complainant reported the theft of cash from his vehicle at Wild Rose Casino. An investigation has begun. At 11:20 am officers investigated a two vehicle property damage accident at N. Elm and W. State St. Robin Murry of St. Louis, was westbound on State St. She stopped as posted and then proceeded into the intersection. She did not see a 2010 Chevy Silverado, owned by Hall Farms and operated by Janelle Hall of Jefferson traveling south on Elm St. Murry struck the driver’s side of Hall’s pickup truck as it passed through the intersection. Murry’s 2009 Honda Accord and Hall’s truck both received an estimated $1,500 in damages. Murry was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. At 6:38 pm a complainant reported a daytime burglary to a residence in the 500 block of S. Locust St. Numerous household items were reported to be missing from the residence. The officer is investigating. At 7:43 pm staff at Regency Park reported the theft of medications. An investigation was initiated.
Sunday, April 17: At 1:14 am Kum & Go employees advised of a loud popping noise in the mechanical room and the store filling with smoke. The Jefferson fire department responded with the officers. The Jefferson area had been experiencing electrical issues during this time period. No fire was located and the business closed for the evening. At 5:28 am an officer checked on a bank alarm activation at Wells Fargo. It was determined to be in connection to the loss of power in the Jefferson area.
Saturday, April 16: At 1:06 am the Jefferson fire department and officers were sent to the Greene County Medical Center for a fire alarm activation. The fire chief determined it to be a false alarm and contributed the incident to recent construction taking place in the area of the hospital. At 8 pm an officer was advised of a possible intoxicated male walking in the 200 block of N. Wilson. The officer made contact with the male at Hy-Vee. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Craig Darwin Presley, 55, of Jefferson for public intoxication.
Friday, April 15: At 7:56 am a complainant reported a burglary to a garage in the 300 block of N. Pinet St. At 12:20 pm the JPD was assisted by the Greene County sheriff’s office, the Carroll County sheriff’s office, the Iowa State Patrol and DCI agents on the execution of narcotics search warrants at 304 and 306 W. Reed St. Items of interest were removed from 306 W. Reed St to be tested. The investigation is ongoing. At 3:44 pm a parent reported that his juvenile son was nearly struck by a vehicle at Elm and W. Lincoln Way while walking home from school. The parent advised this was the second instance of this in the past two weeks. Officers will be offering extra patrol at the four way stop to insure pedestrians are given the right of way while crossing the intersections.
Thursday, April 14: At 7:30 am staff at Kum & Go reported damage to a trash can by the fuel pumps there. At 12:29 pm an officer started an investigation into three counterfeit $50 bills that were passed April 4 at the Sparky’s One Stop.
Wednesday, April 13: At 8:25 pm a complainant reported the theft of an H & H car trailer from a residence in the 400 block of S. Locust St.
Tuesday, April 12: At 4:35 pm a complainant reported the theft of a bicycle from a residence in the 400 block of N. Chestnut St.
Monday, April 11: At 12:38 am a complainant requested an officer at a residence in the 500 block of N. Wilson for a domestic situation. The female involved in the incident had just left the residence before officers arrived. The complainant provided the officers with camera footage of the reported event inside the residence. The officer has applied for an arrest warrant for Christina Lynn Owens, 30, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault – simple*. At 8:17 am a complainant reported two stray dogs in the street near Lincoln Way and Cedar St. The officer was able to capture the animals and placed them in the animal holding facility. At 10:36 pm a complainant reported the theft of a bicycle from a residence in the 400 block of N. Wilson. At 11:11 am staff at Kum & Go reported a gas drive off that had occurred overnight. The officer was provided video surveillance of the event. The officer is investigating. At 7:17 am a complainant reported the theft of items from his residence in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. A roommate had recently moved from the residence and possibly removed the items from the residence. The officer is investigating.
Sunday, April 10: At 1:31 officers were advised of a possible house fire at 504 S. Oak St. Officers located a trash can and two bicycles on fire on the side of the residence. Officers extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher. The Jefferson fire department arrived and completely put out the fire. It was determined a cigarette had started the fire in the garbage can. The house received a reported $2,000 in damages to the exterior. At 2:09 am a complainant reported a criminal mischief to her vehicle in the 100 block of N. Chestnut St. Three males had caused damage to her 2013 Chevy Cruze by hitting and kicking the vehicle as she left the area. Officers have obtained video surveillance of the event and have identified two of the three males in the video. Charges are pending at this time.At 1:56 am an officer was made aware of a vehicle that constantly revs up a loud vehicle in the area of the 200 block of E. Perry St. The officers have dealt with the subject in the past for the same complaint and will make contact with the subject again. Possible charges are pending. At 8 am a complainant reported the theft of a tent from a yard in the 600 block of N. Wilson. Officers are investigating. At 6:02 pm a complainant reported a loose hamster in his yard in the 500 block of W. Washington St.
Saturday, April 9: At 12:53 pm officers were advised of a criminal mischief to a residence in the 400 block of E. Monroe St. The officer is investigating the incident. At 3:53 pm officers investigated a backing accident in the 100 block of S. Chestnut St. A 2007 Dodge Charger, owned by Matthew Durbin and operated by Brock Louk of Jefferson, was parked on the east side of the street. Ian McElderry of Jefferson was northbound driving a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The rear of Louk’s vehicle made contact with the passenger side of McElderry’s vehicle as it passed. The officer is investigating to try and determine who was at fault. Louk’s vehicle had a reported $1,000 in damages while McElderry’s vehicle suffered $500 in damage. A5 3:35 pm a complainant advised officers of a backing accident that had occurred in Grand Junction. The complainant reported a vehicle had backed into another and left the area and named the driver of the vehicle that left. The complainant believed the driver was under the influence of something when the event occurred. Officers located the vehicle in the 100 block of N. Chestnut St a short time later. They spoke with the driver about the event. He gave consent to the officers to search his person and his vehicle. Officers recovered what was believed to be methamphetamine the driver’s person. Further testing will be conducted on the suspected narcotic. At 9:31 pm officers received numerous calls about the driver in the 3:35 incident driving recklessly throughout the county. It was reported that he had made statements to family members about harming himself. An officer was positioned on Westwood Drive, near Deer Run when the officer locked his Lidar radar unit on a vehicle approaching Jefferson from the west. The Lidar locked the vehicle’s speed at 116 mph in a 55 mph zone. The officer performed a traffic stop with the vehicle near Linwood. The officer made contact with Craig Allen Kinsey, 46, of Jefferson. Kinsey was arrested at the scene and charged with possession of methamphetamine (serious misdemeanor) and reckless driving (simple misdemeanor)*. Kinsey was also issued a citation for excessive speed – 116 in 55 mph zone. At 11:19 am a complainant reported he was driving his vehicle near the Jefferson Municipal Airport and people were chasing him and shooting at his vehicle. The complainant reported that numerous vehicles were chasing him around Jefferson and he was driving in excess of 100 mph to get away from them. The Greene County sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol assisted in trying to locate the driver. The Iowa State trooper located the driver parked along the roadway on Highway 30, just east of Jefferson a short time later. The officer’s investigation showed that no one was chasing the complainant as he had advised. Steven Logan Dzuris, 28, of Jefferson was arrested for operating while under the influence –second offense (aggravated) and driving while suspended*.

Thursday, April 7: At 8:11 am staff at Kum & Go reported a pickup had backed into a trash can, causing damage to it, and left the area. Officers later located the vehicle in Jefferson and obtained the driver’s insurance information and provided it to Kum & Go. At 3:05 pm a complainant advised of a white passenger car driving southbound on Highway 4 that was all over the road. The vehicle was approaching Jefferson. A JPD officer and an Iowa State Patrol trooper were unable to locate the vehicle.
Wednesday, April 6: At 9:20 am a complainant requested officers at a residence in the 100 block of E. Central Ave for a reported domestic assault having occurred. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Jody Lyn Schad, 40, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault – simple*. At 11:33 am a complainant reported an attempted burglary at a business in the 300 block of W. McKinley St. The officer is investigating. At 2:02 pm the same complainant of the 9:20 am call requested officers to return to the same location. Schad had been released from the Greene County jail and returned to the residence. Officers arrived and their investigation led to Schad being arrested a second time. Officers learned that Schad arrived home and used a fireplace poker to damage the complainant’s 2000 Nissan Maxima. Schad had also threatened the complainant with the poker. Schad was arrested for assault while displaying a dangerous weapon – aggravated and criminal mischief – fifth degree*. At 6:57 pm staff at Hy-Vee requested officers at for a fight in progress. The officer arrived and learned that a group of subjects had been involved in a verbal argument inside the store. Store employees had forced the group outside into the parking lot. Some subjects had already left the area before officers arrived. One subject returned to the store and fled from officers when they attempted to speak to him. Officers caught the subject in the parking lot after a short foot pursuit. The officer was assisted by two Greene County sheriff’s deputies. Two arrests were made at the scene. John William Haygood, 36, of Jefferson was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct (simple misdemeanors)*. Charges are being sent to the juvenile court for Bentley Isiasha Coventry, 16, of Jefferson for public intoxication and interference with official acts (simple misdemeanors)*. The officer is still investigating the event and further charges are possible against others involved in the event.

Monday, April 4: Charges filed in Pizza Ranch fire. See below. At 12:21 pm a complainant reported walking her leashed dog in the 500 block of W. State St and a loose dog attacked her animal. As the complainant attempted to break up the dogs she was bitten on her lower leg by the loose dog. The bite did not break the skin. The officer took control of the animal until an owner could be identified. The dog’s owner called later and advised of his missing animal. According to city ordinances, the animal was deemed “Illegal” because of attacking another animal and biting a person. The animal had to leave the city limits. The complainant’s animal had only minor injuries.
At 2:16 pm a complainant reported being assaulted by a known male on April 1 at Walton Woods Apartments. At 4:43 pm an officer spoke with a female juvenile from Indianola who advised she was assaulted at an unknown location in Jefferson in November of 2015. The officer has started an investigation. ******* Charges have been filed after the execution of a search warrant at 702 S Wilson on Feb. 25. Arrest warrants have been issued for Michael David Teeples, 22, of Jefferson on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver in proximity to a school (Class B felony) and failure to affix a drug tax stamp and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanors)*. ******* Preliminary charges have been filed in the investigation into the fire at Pizza Ranch on Jan. 26. The Jefferson police department assisted the state fire marshal’s office, the Greene County sheriff’s office, and the Jefferson fire department in the investigation. Evidence gathered at the scene showed multiple origins of where the fire began inside the business. Evidence gathered at the scene and tested at the DCI crime lab showed accelerants had been located in specimens gathered at different locations in the business. Records gathered by search warrants during the investigation showed the business was experiencing financial difficulties. Arrest warrants have been issued for business owner Robert Duane Schultz, 53, of Ankeny for arson – first degree (Class B felony), criminal mischief-first degree (Class C felony) and insurance fraud (Class D felony)*. The investigation is still ongoing and future charges are possible for others who may have had involvement in the fire.
Sunday, April 3: At 12:42 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the Subway parking lot. Brenda Ganoe of Jefferson was backing a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt from a parking spot as Maxwell Neese of Grand Junction was driving a 2006 Dodge Charger in the lot. Ganoe didn’t see Neese and backed into his vehicle. Both vehicles suffered only minor damages.
Saturday, April 2: At 12:14 am Wild Rose security requested an officer for a male subject in the casino who had stolen another customer’s cell phone. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Michael Eugene Hamilton, 38, of Jefferson for theft-fifth degree (simple misdemeanor)*. At 12:30 pm an officer arrested Dustin Richard Evans, 33, of Jefferson on an outstanding Ames PD arrest warrant for sex offender registry violation (felony)*. At 4:25 pm while on patrol an officer spotted a male subject in the 100 block of W. Central Ave for whom he knew there was an outstanding arrest warrant from the JPD. The officer arrested Jody Lyn Schad, 40, of Jefferson on the warrant for theft – fifth degree*. At 6:24 pm a complainant reported items missing from a residence in the 300 block of N. Pinet St. The officer is investigating. At 111:33 pm a complainant reported a loud verbal argument occurring outside a residence in the 300 block of S. Wilson. The officer arrived and noticed two subjects outside of the apartment building. One subject led the officer on a short foot pursuit. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Edward Eugene Goff, 37, of Jefferson for public intoxication and interference with official acts, both simple misdemeanors*.
Friday, April 1: At 12:03 pm officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of N. Cedar St for a domestic assault that reportedly had occurred. The officer’s investigation led to an arrest warrant and arrest of John Logan Jr. for domestic abuse assault – simple*. At 5:25 pm employees at Subway advised of multiple harassing phone calls from a known male in Jefferson. Officers attempted to make contact with the subject, but were unable to do so. The calls continued throughout the evening. At about 10:13 pm an officer arrested Vincent Andrew Ratliff Sr, 57, of Jefferson for harassment-second degree (serious misdemeanor)*.
